Description

Early suits borrowed features from soldiers’ uniforms. Breast pockets were designed for ammunition and were on the left because most men were right-handed, and cuff buttons were meant to stop soldiers from wiping their noses on their sleeves. After the war, returning servicemen's style caught public attention, and in their jealousy, the men who hadn’t served quickly adopted similar looks. The notch lapel was originally in the upward position, as it was on the frock coat, with a buttonhole to secure the collar around the neck. As indoor heating improved, the collar dropped for comfort. Today, suits can range from very formal to comfortably casual, but traditional details endure because they combine heritage with practical design.
